Why digital skills masterclass training?

According to a report published by Wachira Kigotho on July 20, 2019 on University World News, which is a Global Window on Higher Education, it highlighted that: African universities have been producing too many graduates with costly degrees and diplomas that lack mastery of skills that are necessary in the 21st century labor market, according to researchers at the African Development Bank.

In a new policy research report released last month entitled Creating Decent Jobs: Strategies, Policies, and Instruments, the African Development Bank says most of the degrees awarded by African universities lack the academic rigor, relevance, and career-focused skills to enable graduates to get decent jobs.

“Higher education... is becoming less affordable, and its outcomes are often viewed as substandard. And many colleges and universities fail to help students graduate with the skills necessary to compete for high-paying jobs in today’s workforce. Far too many graduates today (among the few who complete higher education) find themselves with costly diplomas and degrees and no direct connection to jobs. They often lack the most relevant academic skills and the career skills to get a good job,” the report states.

Lack of Academic Rigor

Teachers, tutors, course instructors, and the courses are not tailored to inspire creative and innovative learning that will help the students aim to work in high-paying jobs after their degrees. They are not empowered during the learning process. The training model is more of pedagogical training model.

Irrelevant Degrees

Due to a lack of academic rigor, graduate certificates have little or no place in the labor market because they are not backed up by the graduates competences. That is why a graduate with a masters degree in engineering in Cameroon is a motorbike rider in Douala, as highlighted in the report above.

Lack of Career-Focused Skills

Skills are defined as competences and abilities to do or undo something. Over 80% of graduates in Africa lack the required skills after obtaining their university degrees. They lack interpersonal, leadership, creativity, critical thinking, entrepreneurial, communication, and above all, technical skills.
